I think Thief 1, actually both are two of the best games ever made. Thief: The Dark Project was the one that brought about the new ideas and innovation, which is what really matters. Thief II: The Metal Age have perfected and refined the innovation seen from the first one though I still prefere Thief 1 to be honest.

Wow. I am _really_ surprised to hear people other than myself claim Thief as the best game ever. I mean looking from an FPP perspective it wasn't graphically superior to many other games released at the time. Looking past the Unreals *cough* and Quakes *choke* of the time, Thief had class and climate. The gameplay was superbly balanced and the story...just wow. That's why for me Max Payne comes a close second - another game with fine climatics and the telling of a great storyline.

I have to admit its one of the more thought-provoking games released. Deadly Shadows is also really good, not as difficult as, say, Thief 2 but they all make you work for your rewards.
Note: If you have recently bought the Sold Out double pack Thief 1 and 2... Watch Out! I installed Thief 1 and it crashed, nothing I did worked, so if you have an older copy of this try installing that instead. I had an older Sold Out: Thief 1, installed it and it worked! No crashing before menu! Faulty Install on the double pack perhaps? Thief 2 was fine btw.
